The purpose of the storytelling concept is to bring joy and a sense of community to the everyday care of elderly people by using nature, creativity and memories with the help of new technology and cultural content.
Senior homes and service centres have good technical facilities for different kinds of cultural activities but inspiring and stimulating content is missing. The growing number of tablet computers in senior care increases the need for good content also in the voluntary work and home service of senior citizens.
“Today in Nature” storytelling concept was developed by Marita Rainbird and tested with senior citizens and elderly care workers in Kontula Senior Service Center in Helsinki with the support of Finnish Arts Promotion Centre in 2016-2017. The concept development continues.
In the digital storytelling concept
* the digital material on nature stimulates different senses and the mind to recall memories.
* creative storytelling and reminiscence improve seniors’ ability to communicate and promote self-esteem and self-worth.
* the concept contributes to human encounters and emotional interaction between seniors and care workers, while also improving the well-being of the community.
* the stimulation of memories of nature through creative storytelling improves and maintains a person’s overall health and well-being.
